Hurling Studios’ LightCube Lights up a City Set

Massive-Miniatures may sound like an oxymoron, but that’s exactly what the Tastebuds Creative team achieved when they built a massive-mini Venice Beach at Hurling Studios.
Room for set-building is a huge advantage that the Hurling Studios location offers productions. When Tastebuds built this set for the UGG Fluff Yeah commercial campaign, the LightCube overhead lighting rig was an essential part of the illuminating all of the amazing details of this hand-crafted ocean side city. With the flip of a switch the 28 foot by 28 foot overhead softbox illuminated the entire set. It’s super bright and perfect for achieving deep focus and capturing detail. Made up of 15 different LiteGear Light Tile panels, each can be controlled with the DMX board to adjust luminance or color temperature from daylight to tungsten.

There is a special place in my heart for detailed miniature sets. Atsuko Okatsuka stomps through the set in her fan-favorite Fluffy Uggs. Inspired by films like ‘Attack of the 50 Ft. Woman‘ and ‘Godzilla‘, Tastebuds Creative set out to create a miniature world and relaunch the shoe like a Hollywood premiere.

Luxury brands are leaning into hand-made hand-crafted productions. In a time of A.I. where anyone with a subscription can pixel-bash some A.I.-slop together — it’s these kinds of detail rich and human-crafted works of art that connect with audiences. Human-made is now the mark of elevated luxury and taste. Tastebuds pulled this off brilliantly in this campaign delivering a solid concept, with humor, and a hand-crafted set packed with fun details waiting to be discovered in every shot.

The Hurling Studios location delivers a wide range of looks in a single 6,000 sq. foot studio space. Producers often refer to Hurling Studios as getting two-studios-in-one, since half of the studio is the ‘Dark-Side’ with black walls, and the other half is the huge white cyclorama with the overhead lighting rig. Crews are often filming a black-box studio look and also a white-void look on the same day. Set builds can be constructed on the dark-side or under the LightCube or span from one side into the other. Check out the Sabrina Carpenter set build for an example of this!
